Transformed Mind

Series Context: Lasting Transformation

  • Four-week mini-series on transformation in the human heart

    • Week 1 (Emily): overview of the integrated whole person

    • Week 2 (today): transformed mind, renewing thoughts

    • Week 3 (Paul): social dimension, family and friends

    • Week 4 (Aug 9): community and national transformation, revival principles applied to Omaha in 2026

  • Framework borrowed from Dallas Willard and John Ortberg: the integrated soul

    • Will (heart): the secret place, only God sees it; where surrender begins

    • Mind: personality, disposition, what others observe

    • Body: what we do with our body affects our heart and vice-versa

    • Social: shaped by family, culture, upbringing

  • Ezekiel 36 anchor: God gives a new heart (new covenant); transformation then works outward through the mind

The Renewed Mind: Romans 12:1–2

  • Core text: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”

  • Obedience is the doorway to mental renewal, not the result of it

    • Oswald Chambers: “Obedience is the doorway to every spiritual revelation”

    • Earthly things must be known to be loved; spiritual things must be loved to be known

  • Renewal flows as a cycle: obedience → renewed mind → knowing God’s will → deeper obedience

  • Three dimensions of a transformed mind:

    • Spiritual: we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians); God’s Spirit already placed within

    • Chemical: neuroplasticity, actual brain chemistry God can reshape

    • Practical: what we choose to fill our minds with (Colossians 3:1–3, Philippians 4:8–9)

Neuroplasticity: God Built Redemption into Biology

  • Brain scans of recovering addicts show measurably different brain structure after sobriety

  • “Neurons that fire together wire together”: repeated choices carve neural pathways like trails through tall grass

  • Old paths can be redirected; new trails form with consistency

  • “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is scientifically false: the mind is plastic from womb to tomb

  • God’s written word and the book of creation do not contradict each other

  • Practical implication: when pursuing God, expect old junk to surface first

    • Jesus cleanses the temple before filling it

    • Wounds, anger, old images, ingrained habits will rise; this is part of renewal, not a sign of failure

The Romans 7 Problem and the Abiding Solution

  • Romans 7:15–25: the fractured soul doing what it hates, not what it wills

    • Read as a born-again Christian struggling with sin before the Romans 8 solution

    • Will wants obedience; body and mind lag behind

  • The “fish tank” picture: sinful nature bobs up and down against the Spirit

  • The Jesus solution: abiding in Christ, not willpower

    • Willpower is weak; the Spirit of Christ is strong

    • Abiding places the believer inside Christ’s buoyancy, superseding the law of sin

    • “Freedom from the pull of sin is found in abiding in the buoyancy of Christ”

  • Andrew Murray: “The praying man won’t sin and the sinning man won’t want to pray”

  • Every temptation is an invitation to intimacy or isolation

  • New heavens and new earth: no sin because of constant, unbroken fellowship with Christ (the Lamb is the light, Greek: phoster)

Practical Application: Renewing Your Mind

  • Diagnostic questions to sit with:

    • What is your mind currently saturated with?

    • What runs through your mind unfiltered reveals what is in your heart unprocessed

    • What lies are you partnering with mentally and emotionally?

  • Journaling exercise (three questions, to do alone with God):

    1. What have other people said about me?

    2. What do I say about myself?

    3. God, what do you say about me?

  • Taking thoughts captive: interrogate each thought (“who sent you, what is your purpose?”)

    • Pity, anger, exhaustion, and old wounds masquerade as truth

    • Blessing people by name as a practice to shift the mind

  • Meditation defined: Matthew Henry, “meditation is the means by which we preach to ourselves”

    • Re-sing old songs of faith; re-preach known truth back to yourself

  • Spotify Wrapped as a spiritual diagnostic: what you listen to consistently reveals what your soul is aching for

  • Colossians 3 and Philippians 4:8–9 as the filter: true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy
